After over a decade providing vintage wares from the Barkly Street boutique, Velour will soon be closing its doors and leaving St Kilda.

Unfortunately the last few years have seen a dramatic change to St Kilda's retail landscape, with a slew of local independants having either thrown it in or moved to greener pastures.

So we've decided to switch focus to provide you with an online selection - browsable 24/7 and delivered right to your doorstep. We've made a handful of our goods available online for the past couple of years, but our website will soon have everything you once came to the boutique for, and a whole lot more.

So all of this means you should get down here quick sticks for some MEGA SALE times! Make sure you 'Like' our Facebook page to keep updated on the goings on as we wind up the last few weeks as a bricks & mortar and kick off Velour's virtual emporium.

I'm getting a bit scan happy and thought i'd delve into some of my more interesting vintage cookbooks and pamphlets.

"Recipes from the stars" appears to have been put out in the late 50's to benefit the Yooralla crippled childrens appeal-see Yooralla's history here.

An array of temptations are included, as chosen by the big Aussie stars of TV and radio, along with some tips n' tricks from chefs and food writers.

A babyfaced Bert Newton's pick is carpet bag steak, a particularly horrifying combination(well, as far as i'm concerned-being vegetarian) of steak stuffed with oysters, bacon wrapping optional.

"A real man's dish"

Anybody sampled this delicacy? I've been assured it's really not that outrageous and something of an Aussie favourite, but y'know, having not eaten meat in 12 years has put blinkers on me in regards to this stuff.

I wanted to include some contemporary footage, so not long after this, Bert had moved to channel 9 and was kicking off the Hi Fi Club - there's not too much info floating around about the show, so feel free to offer any further insight. It looks to be the precursor to shows like countdown, but isn't included in this list of Australian music shows...

TAKEN FROM THIS TRANSCRIPT:

"GEORGE NEGUS: In those days, television was like radio with pictures for somebody like yourself, wasn't it?

BERT NEWTON: I think we all thought it would be that way. I remember, as that young kid at 3XY, they were talking about television arriving in Australia. I assumed it was going to be an announcer sitting there and chatting, very much like this.

GEORGE NEGUS: Yes – old-fashioned television.

BERT NEWTON: But playing records. And I used to think, "I wonder what they'll do when they play records. Will they just go into a turntable or whatever?" And of course, we discovered eventually it was much more than that.

BERT NEWTON ON THE 'HI FI CLUB':

That was the exciting time for me and for everybody else who was in it, because nobody knew anything about it. The people who actually were the chief engineers and the, um, program directors and general managers had no more than four weeks experience over in America, invariably at the Cleveland, Ohio, television station, for some reason. They all graduated from there after four weeks. So the floor managers, the cameramen, the announcers, the singers were all learning together.

GEORGE NEGUS: Making it up as you went along.

BERT NEWTON: Yeah, and the audience didn't know any better, so absolute rubbish was looking quite good to them."

On the "to do" list for quite some time, has been the scanning of my vintage magazines. The release of Paper giants: The birth of Cleo was the perfect impetus to get started on this slightly daunting task. For anyone who missed it - you can grab the dvd here and there's an excellent article about Ita here.

First up I went for February 1975. Featuring Jack Thompson, the first subject of the "Mate of the Month" centrefold, and the first(and last?) bloke to make it onto the cover, Barry as Dame Edna aside.

1960's Paper dresses exhibition

Chadstone shopping center is hosting a fun exhibition of paper dresses until June 5th, including a coveted campbells "souper"!

The collection has a strong focus on 1960's pieces, but incorporates 18th and 19th-century Japanese and Chinese hand painted kimonos and paper sandals, too. Definitely worth checking out.

I recently came across the art of Sandhi Schimmel Gold, who creates these incredible collage portraits entirely from recycled junk mail, old postcards, photos, and the like.

She says:

"My work reflects our society's obsession with beauty through advertising - and the endless images that bombard us daily. It is a purposeful intermix of images derived from advertising and thousands of incongruent pieces - images and text - from advertising that arrives through my mailbox. Assembled like a mosaic; the paper tiles create an entirely new image - an eclectic and tactile portrait reworked in my imagination, utilizing materials that would otherwise go to waste."

"I create without waste. I upcycle junk mail, calendars, post cards, photos, old greeting cards, tags, etc... it's all paper waste I collect. I use only water-based, acid-free, non-toxic materials to create my work. It is completely eco-friendly. I reuse and repurpose canvas, frames, etc. whenever possible."

Velour @ Zeitgeist Becomes Form - German fashion photography 1945-1995

Last week The Australian Academy of Design and the Goethe Institute hosted a runway event to mark the "finissage" of the inspiring "Zeitgeist Becomes Form" exhibition of German fashion photography 1945-1995, curated by FC Gundlach. Included were seminal works by sometimes Melbournian Helmut Newton, alongside Juergen Teller, and Willy Maywald to mention only a few.

The evening included a talk by 1950's & 60's Australian model Diane Masters, regaling the audience with tales of her work with close friend Helmut - and the occasional poodle, a runway show featuring vintage accessories by us here at Velour spanning the 40's-80's with hats by master milliner Paris Kyne, and a student runway show entitled "Fashion in Film" with pieces inspired by the films Ever After, Funny Face, Factory Girl, Pearl Harbour, The Wizard of Oz and Morrocco.

Just a quick post to let you know we have the most DIVINE vintage inspired swimsuits now in stock. I'll do big posts on each respective label soon, but here's a little sneak peek!

This one might be my favourite of the day, it's of course ever changing as each and every one is absolutely to die for.

Aren't they just the bees knees!? They're all made here in Victoria, with the majority done in original vintage fabrics and therefore only limited quanities of each print are available, making them all the more special.
The cuts are insanely flattering and they are all fully lined and a-ok for swimming.
On top of these guys we always have a gorgeous selection of vintage swimwear, from 60's bikinis and 40's maillots to psychedelic mens trunks. You know where to come for your Summer cossie!

The photos are a marvel in themselves, and if you're handy with knitting needles there are some seriously amazing patterns to have a go at - I especially love the beautiful 40's dresses with their boggling array of intricate stitches.

Grey Gardens and window trunks

Velour has a fantastic new(ish) addition to the window display that i've managed to photograph as best I could:

Original hangers and all. I just adore it.

Speaking of adoration, I got my mittens on HBO's Grey Gardens movie the other day.

I did so with much apprehension, but oh I just loved it!
Drew and Jessica not only bore a striking likeness to the original Edie's, but were absolutely spot on in their portrayals, with their accent and mannerisms being particularly marvelous to behold.
I shan't rave on and on, but here are some pretty pictures of some of the amazing outfits and the recreation of Grey Gardens in it's heyday:

So a friend and I have been restoring a kids ride to wonderland condition for the shops Easter window/our general entertainment.

Presenting...

He will also have a little bowler hat and fob watch as of tomorrow, but i'm impatient to share him and will be busy busy with the sale over the weekend.
The base is covered in fake grass, the sides are chalkboard, and yes, HE WORKS!
I have something of an obsession with Alice in Wonderland and already know what my next project will be, stay tuned!

It has been recently taken over by the folk who brought you consignment boutique El Segundo - 2/381 Hampton Street Hampton, and we have plans a plenty!
